1. DEFINITION

The education system in Spain is regulated and defined by state and regional laws. Formal education is characterized as an organized and regulated system of teaching that adheres to a curriculum and grants recognized academic certificates. The Spanish education system is structured into stages, courses, and levels. Progression from one educational level to another is typically achieved through the completion of courses and the attainment of academic certificates.

1.1. EDUCATION BY AGE IN SPANISH TERRITORY

  • EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (Preschool) – for children aged  0 to 6 years.
  • PRIMARY EDUCATION – for students aged 6 to 12 years.
  • COMPULSORY SECONDARY EDUCATION (ESO) – for students aged 12 to 16 years.
  • BACHELOR’S DEGREE OR VOCATIONAL TRAINING (FP). Includes Intermediate-level vocational training cycles and Advanced-level vocational training cycles.
  • UNIVERSITY EDUCATION.

3. WHERE TO PURSUE EDUCATION FROM THE EDUCATION SYSTEM?

  • Public Centers: These institutions are secular and receive funding from the public administration. Admission criteria are determined by the Administration, and capacity may be limited.
  • Private Centers: Private institutions are funded by student’s families, and admission criteria can vary from one institution to another. 
  • Concerted Centers: These are private institutions that receive subsidies, at least in part, from the public administration.
